The CROWN Act

How do you want to get involved?

What is the CROWN Act?

The CROWN Act is proposed legislation, which would prevent employer discrimination tactics that focus on one’s appearances, specifically the texture and style of one’s hair. This type of discrimination affects all people of color, but most specifically Black women. It is often the plight of people of color, to leave a part of themselves and their culture, to thrive in work environments. We at BLM RI PAC believe hair is not a signifier of your ability to be a productive worker or whether or not you should be hired. The CROWN act is a proven piece of legislation adopted by multiple municipalities and state governments across the country, that has prevented this type of this discrimination to effective result. We’re working with local municipalities across the state to get this passed as an ordinance. If enough cities and towns pass this ordinance, we believe we’ll have enough public support to get this into law at the state level.

Dear Chair Kraven and Members of the House Judiciary Committee,

My name is [YOUR NAME HERE] and I am resident of [YOUR TOWN HERE]. I'm here writing to express my support for H6235, which supports the CROWN Act.

This act would prohibit discrimination discrimination on the basis of race by expanding the definition of race to include traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protective hairstyles.

[ANY PERSONAL/ PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE YOU MAY HAVE]

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
